All the extra services provided by pharmacy that are not part of the essential or advanced service part of the contractual framework now come under the banner of enhanced services. This means that things like out of hours rota and advice to care homes now become local enhanced services dependant upon the PCT wishing to commission them and provide funding.
Enhanced services can be commissioned by PCTs and practice based commissioning groups in response to the needs of their local population. Pharmacies may also approach PCTs with proposals to provide enhanced services and will clearly have more success where they are using supporting evidence to demonstrate that there is a need for the service.
The PSNC have produced eleven enhanced service template specifications so far which contractors might find useful when considering providing an enhanced service, however as these are templates the actual specifications used by PCT are likely to be different in order to reflect specific local needs.
The LPC is working with the Essex pharmacy leads group and individual PCTs to try to achieve as much consistency in service specification and pricing of enhanced services as possible across Essex and to explore opportunities for providing new services to our patients.
